Tech giant develop a national online directory of charities and not-for-profit organisations.
They say Christmas is a time for giving and Google has certainly done that with donation of US$100,000 to Australian not-for-profit Connecting Up Australia (CUA) to help develop a national online directory of charities and not-for-profit organisations.
To date, Australia doesn’t have a comprehensive directory of charities and nonprofit organisations that people can use to find and research organisations and causes.
The directory will encourage collaboration amongst the listed organisations, and between not-for-profits, donors, governments and business, says the CUA.
“The level of understanding among the wider community of the sector’s role and contribution is poor and deserves attention,” according to CEO Mr Doug Jacquier of Adelaide based CUA.
“The public will have a one-stop-shop for listing and searching for nonprofit organisations across the country. Hundreds of organisations that have no web presence now will be available to be easily found via web searching.
There are around 60,000 not-for-profits currently in Australia, employing over half a million people.
“It seemed to us extraordinary that nothing like this directory has existed, so we have invested a considerable amount of our own funds in developing this project.
“The generous and timely grant we have received from the Google Inc Charitable Giving Fund will help us speed up the project and we’re looking to launch before the end of June 2011,” he said.
Google’s Giving Fund, its charitable fund, also donated to the likes of the Bharti Foundation, Global Strategies for HIV Prevention, NatureBridge and UNICEF this year.
