Google Hails Harbour Bridge 80th Birthday

Google’s latest doodle hails Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge, which is celebrating its 80th birthday today.
The Google Doodle of the world famous Harbour Bridge features on Google Australia home page today, marking 80 years since the Bridge was opened by New South Wales Premier, Mr Jack Lang, on this day back in 1932.

The bridge joined Sydney city at Dawes Point to Milsons Point in the north for the first time cutting out the need for ferry travel to make the now short journey to the city from northern end.

Known locally as ‘coat hanger’ it was longest single span steel arch bridge in the world at the time.

Work started in 1924 by British firm Dorman Long and Co of Middlesbrough although plans for such a construction had first been flagged as early as 1815.

Several hundred families were forced out of their homes because they lived in the path of the bridge.

The debt for the construction was paid off in just 1988 but tolls are now used for maintenance works.
