SAN FRANCISCO – The Star Wars edition of Google’s Cardboard virtual reality (VR) headset has completely sold out in the USA in three days. But Google’s not earning a cent from the promotion.Released on December 11 for a limited time, the Star Wars-themed Cardboard devices were marketed a week ahead of the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will launch in the USA on December 18.
Fans were able to choose from several variations within the Star Wars theme, such as R2-D2, BB-8, KyloRen, or a First Order Stormtrooper. Estimated promotional price was between US$15 and $25, but the rub for would-be buyers was that in the event Google sent all of them out for free, including shipping.
For people wishing to get their hands on one – forget it: Google has said it won’t be stocking more Star Wars-themed Cardboards.
