On the eve of a US corporate remaking program which sees it split into two companies Hewlett-Packard Australia – once known for some of the dowdiest PCs on the market – yesterday flew several Sydney-based IT journos luding CDN editor David Frith to Melbourne to see some striking new models at its equally striking and only recently opened “Experience Centre” at the so-called Paris-end of Collins Street.
Some of the newbies were design-based revelations and despite problems with the Aussie dollar might just offer serious competition to Asian competitors such as Lenovo Toshiba Acer and Asus – not to mention its near neighbour in California’s Silicon Valley Apple
High among them were the touchscreen Spectre 2 detachable notebook currently going at JB Hi-Fi for $1497: a very slick number indeed; and the very un-detachable 13-h Envy 2 notebook which H-P describes as “impossibly thin” though no pricing was available yesterday.
A highlight in the Experience Centre was a brace of huge curved-screen monitors luding the 34 h H-P Envy curved all-in-one pictured: price TBA. – DF
