Hackers Target Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures Entertainment has been targeted by hackers, with Reuters reporting its computer system was down for a second day on Tuesday.Employees who tried to log on to their work computers on Monday were greeted with an image of a red skeleton on the screen under “Hacked By #GOP”, reportedly short for “Guardians of Peace”, along with a list of threats, the Los Angeles Times originally reported, with the system then going down.

“We’ve already warned you, and this is just a beginning,” the Los Angeles Times reported a message posted by the hackers as stating.

“We continue till our request be met…. If you don’t obey us, we’ll release data shown below to the world.”

Sony has previously been the target of cyberattacks – in 2011 its PlayStation Network was targeted, with 77 million users’ account data compromised, while in August of this year hackers again forced the network to go down.

The Los Angeles Times said staff from coast to coast couldn’t log on to computers or access email, instead having to use pen and paper and take calls on landline telephones.

“We even fired up our fax machine,” the Los Angeles Times reported one person as stating.

Reuters has reported Sony Pictures spokeswoman Jean Guerin as stating the company’s network was down as it dealt with “a system disruption”, with technicians “working diligently” to resolve the issue.
