HTC Trounces Apple In Giant US Market

The slogan “quietly brilliant” seems to be working for HTC who has overnight edged out Apple to take the lead in the U.S. smartphone market.

The slogan “quietly brilliant” seems to be working for HTC who has overnight edged out Apple to take the lead in the U.S. smartphone market.

According to a new research report from Canalys HTC shipped more than 5.7 million smartphones in the United States in the third quarter of 2011 resulting in the Taiwanese Company capturing nearly a quarter of the US market in the third quarter.

HTC has become a deserved leader in the US smart phone market,” said Canalys Vice Preident Chris Jones. “This is an awesome achievement for HTC, which has built a premium brand in a highly competitive market in just a few short years. It now has a strong range of 4G Android products, with devices ranged by each of the major carriers, and offers some of the most compelling and differentiated products found on the platform today.”

Samsung took second place in the third quarter, with 4.9 million units shipped in the U.S., while Apple iPhone shipments totaled 4.6 million units. Apple’s bump to third place was mostly due to consumers waiting for the launch of the iPhone 4S, reports Canalys.

With the next-generation iPhone, Jones said he expects to see a strong fourth quarter for Apple. This could spell trouble for HTC, which is expecting a weaker fourth quarter due to competition from Apple and Samsung, reports Reuters. The company expects to rebound in the first quarter of 2012, when it releases its LTE 4G phones.

The struggling Research in Motion, which lacks a 4G smartphone, fared worst in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2011, with its market share falling below 10 percent for the first time. Its popularity is growing in other parts of the world, though.

Globally, Samsung is the number one smartphone vendor, shipping 23.3 million phones in the third quarter, followed by Nokia and Apple.
