IFA 2016: LG To Showcase HDR TV Tech Across Different Formats

LG will be showcasing its HDR tech at IFA 2016 this week, with its newest range of OLED TVs to be on display, delivering content remastered using HDR and HDR10, as well as hybrid log gamma (HLG) technology, along with Dolby Vision.LG has teamed up with a number of broadcasters and content providers to showcase HDR, with several demonstrations to be held, with its OLED TVs supporting both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

A demonstration involving the transmission of HLG content will utilise Astra’s satellite network and the BBC’s terrestrial broadcasting system.

“HLG is a new HDR standard jointly developed by the BBC and NHK of Japan that utilises a single distribution bitstream, which can be decoded by both dedicated HDR receivers and legacy non-HDR receivers,” LG explains.

“This new standard is designed to enable broadcasters to send HDR transmissions over cable and to provide streaming live content, making HLG an excellent choice for broadcast HDR services.”

LG states that it will also be the first to publicly demonstrate HDR combining high frame rate (HFR) with HLG content, teaming up with the BBC and the European Broadcasting Union for the demonstration, with the content compatible with both MPEG DASH (IP streaming) and DVB-T2 transmission systems.

LG explains that HFR “enhances the quality of ultra-HD images”, delivering up to 100/120 frames per second, with the enhanced frame rate translating “to smoother, more realistic on-screen movements”.
