Incompetent Philips Finally Calls It Quits

Philips has finally quit the Australian market but not before dumping left over stock. Insiders claim that some retailers who purchased Philips leftovers – from TVs to headphones – are reaping increased margins by “not passing the savings onto consumers”.

ChannelNews can also reveal that despite efforts by Philips Consumer Technology and Lifestyle General Manager Matt Moran to find a distributor to continue selling Philips TVs, Philips executives in Europe chose to give Australia a miss due to low volumes and problems associated with the manufacture of PAL systems for the OZ market.

Wayne Farran, Marketing Manager at Syntec, the distributor of Sennheiser headphones, said, “During the past month or so Philips has been dumping stock into the Australian market. We are seeing both headphone and other small CE accessories dumped.”

A Melbourne-based distributor said, “Philips have been discreetly dumping stock for months we have been offered home theatre kits and left over TVs but we declined. We have also been told that Philips executives are not interested in the Australian market. At first Matt Moran was attempting to negotiate a deal that would see the Philips TV range sold in Australia however European executives chose to give the market a miss.”

The European Company, who has earned a reputation for being “lousy marketers”, is now set to concentrate on the lighting market with all consumer electronic staff retrenched. It is not known who will service Philips products or whether the Company will support warranty claims as no exit media statement has been issued by Philips Australia.
