Intel Get Serious About Smartphone & Tablet Chips

Intel is beginning to take smartphone and tablet chips seriously after the company announced it formed a unit dedicated to the mobile cause.

As TechFlash report, the move consolidates four separate product groups and will be headed by two executives. For the top jobs Intel has recruited Mike Bell, a former Apple and Palm inc employee and Hermann Eul, whose Intel stint kicked off in 2010 when the company purchased Infineon and a group called “Mobile Communications.”

Ever since the company failed to respond to the industry’s dynamic shift towards mobile smartphones and tablets, they’ve generated less revenue from a slowing-down PC division. Last year, a similar move was made to cushion the changing industry, when Intel forged a division focussing on networks and tablets.

On Monday, the company slashed its Q4 revenue forecast by a billion dollars, blaming the floods in Thailand which led to a subsequent shortage in hard-disk drives.

Although pioneers in the PC world, Intel’s foray into the smartphone market will be an uphill battle, since its delayed timing afforded its rivals great opportunites.
