iPhone 5 Deviates From Jobs’ Vision

A leaked schematic of the next iPhone has hit the interweb and reveals drastic changes to the phone’s screen.

The first shocker is the phone will feature a larger 4 inch screen. A larger screen would make the iPhone more competitive in a smartphone climate where Apple’s 3.5 inch screen trails behind. But Jobs was involved with the 4S’ development, and word has it he scrapped another iPhone model because it had a bigger screen.

Jobs was a purist, choosing to innovate new trends rather than follow the norm. All it takes is a look at Apple’s range to realise he had a no-compromise approach and a bigger screen meant compromise. It would fragment support, make it harder to program apps for, roll out upgrades and would compromise its web-rendering integrity.

This goes directly against the iPhone philosophy where one device handles a variety of content through the structured provisioning and support of software.

iPhone5reviewed.com, amongst other sources, believes Jobs was adamant the screen of an iPhone 4 would stagnate at 3.5 inches:

“Steve Jobs was never a fan of the bigger screens…The theory is that different screen sizes will make it difficult for future iOS upgrades to be used across the board, in iPhones that belong to the previous generations.”

The 4″ screen would also conform to the widescreen ratio of 16:9. So far, every iPhone and iPad has adopted the conventional 4:3 ratio, opting for work real estate rather than prioritising the cinema ratio.

The leaked schematics match previously leaked images of next-gen iPhone parts, imbuing them with some credibility. If the next gen iPhone has a bigger screen and Apple do go ahead with releasing a 7″ iPad, it would mark a change in the company’s successful vision.
