iPhone 5 Knocks Android Off Throne

Soaring iPhone 5 sales knock Android into second place in US
iPhone 5 saves Apple bacon against Android, pushing it to the top of smartphone charts in the all-important US market.

That’s according to the latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel, which shows strong uptake of the new 4″ iPhone 5 over the past 3 months has boosted Apple iOS back to the number one spot, ahead of arch rival Android.

The majority of US iPhone 5 sales, come from existing Apple owners upgrading, although benefitted from people switching from Android (13%), BlackBerry devices (6%) and first time smartphone owners

Apple iOS now has a 48% share of US smartphone sales just beating Android which has 46.7% of US consumers using the Google-made OS, used by several top names like Samsung, HTC and Motorola.

However, recent data from other analysts including Gartner indicates Android is the top phone OS globally, with around 70% of the smartphone pie.

“The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods,” said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

However, it wasn’t the same story in Europe Kantar new data shows, where Android OS still takes the lead, accounting for 74% of sales in Germany and almost 82% in Spain, thanks to the popularity of the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The iPhone also enjoys strong performance in Britain with almost 33% market share and recorded share gains in four of the five major European countries.

But there’s more good news for Apple with the Kantar analyst predicting Cupertino “will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods,” meaning it could gain far more than 50% share of that enormous market.

And it’s all down to consumer loyalty to Apple.

“Apple has always managed to maintain loyalty levels far above the competition, and this has clearly played a part in driving sales of its new device” said Sunnebo

An impressive 92% of existing Apple owners in the US said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade. This is “a clear sign of the strength of the brand in the US marketplace.”

The Kantar data also showed the Nokia Lumia 610 and 800 – both Microsoft Windows devices – is selling like hot cakes in Italy.
