Judge Scores $18K Payout

In what could mark the beginning of a run on Telstra’s lawsuit defence funding plan, the telco has been ordered to pay a family law judge 18-grand – and apologise -after it failed to tell him (or her) that it had published the judge’s details in the White Pages online and print directory. According to the OAIC, the unnamed judge – identified only as “DK” contacted Telstra to have a phone line connected to his/her home alarm system.

Telstra set up the line and published the judge’s name, address, and the number of the phone line in both the White Pages online and in print through its Sensis subsidiary. Hizzonner sued, successfully claiming his privacy had been invaded.

To no-one’s great surprise, privacy commissioner Timothy Pilgrim found that the judge’s concerns warranted “substantial financial recompense”.
