LG Offers Limp Android 4.0 Upgrade Support

LG has confirmed 3 of its smartphones will be receiving the Android refresh to Ice Cream Sandwich, which is dwarfed when compared to the support offered by HTC and Sony Ericsson.

LG’s Optimus Black

So far LG’s commitment has fallen short of that made by Sony Ericsson, who intends on upgrading its entire 2011 range of Xperia smartphones, and HTC, who will provide the ICS update to 8 of its phones. LG on the other hand have only confirmed the update for 3 phones.

The three phones include LG’s Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black and the Optimus 3D. The three supported phones make up less than 50% of the company’s current Android range.

Although the company intends on upgrading only 3 models, they are investigating whether the software will be compatible on a fourth phone (LG Optimus Spirit).

“We are also continuing to evaluate the Android 4.0 ( ICS) OS to determine whether it is compatible with the functionality, features and performance of other LG smartphones to make the software available on as many LG smartphones as possible,” they said in the statement.

The company didn’t disclose when the upgrade would be ready, but asked that customers check the LG website and Facebook page in December for details.

LG customers missing out on the Official ICS update can always try out an unofficial hack, provided the hardware has the legs to keep up.
