LG Recalls Dangerous Products After Being Caught Lying

Days after they were exposed for false product labelling LG Australia has announced the voluntary recall of two side by side refrigerators and a portable DVD player. The products were deemed to be a high risk to consumers. In a statement issued to ChannelNews today, the company said “We have become aware of two of our products – including some models of side-by-side door fridges and- failing to meet our own high standards and posing a potential risk to consumer safety. We sincerely apologise and are taking every possible action to remove the risks these products pose from Australian homes and retailers, resolve the problems with minimal inconvenience to our consumers, and put in place measures to ensure these problems do not occur again”.The products that are subject to this voluntary recall are the following side-by-side refrigerators:

  • Non-Dispenser Model Numbers GC-B197WFI, GC-B197STS and GC-B19ACF
    – Dispenser Model Numbers  GC-L197HFS, GC-L197NFS and GC-P197WFS

LG has discovered that the earthing screw used to fasten the main earth wire on these fridges may only be partially insulated which can result in a poor electrical earth which could result in customers receiving a minor electric shock from their fridge in rare circumstances. All units – which have been available at major retailers since May 2009 – have been removed from sale.

Other products that are subject to this voluntary recall are the power adapters for the following portable DVD models:

–  DP392G
–  DP351G
–  DP450G

LG discovered that there is a risk that the universal power adapter may detach from the plug pins where excessive force has been applied, potentially causing a minor electric shock. Products were sold from 2007 to present but have been quarantined and removed from sale.

Although the assessment of these issues indicates there is minimal risk to consumers from these products, LG takes the firm position that no risk is acceptable to its consumers and has taken decisive action to ensure consumer safety is our top priority.

LG is committed to the successful, safe and speedy resolution of both of these issues with minimal inconvenience to consumers. We are therefore advising that consumers cease use of the products and call our customer care line on 1800 506 154 to immediately organise:

1.      Repair of the side-by-side fridge; $200 reimbursement for the potential loss of refrigerated food (with an additional $50 per day after an initial 48 hours until the repair is completed or 7 days, whichever comes first); and a 50 percent discount on the purchase of the next LG product up to a maximum discount of $1,000
2.      Replacement of the portable DVD player power adapter

LG Electronics Australia will be conducting both an internal investigation and working with independent auditors to review the quality processes and procedures to ensure these product faults do not happen again. We are committed to maintaining the highest quality standards in all of our products and continuing public trust in the LG brand.
