Microsoft Could Be In For Big Hit If Chrome OS Takes Off

Microsoft could be in for a big hit if the new Google Chrome OS takes off in the same way that their browser and Android phone OS has taken off.According to Gartner, Microsoft has 78.6 percent of the global market revenue share, for desktop operating systems, at the end of 2010; revenues were up almost 9 percent from 2009 with the US company netting $30.4 billion in revenue.

Apple’s OS market revenue shot up almost 16 percent to 1.7 percent, Red Hat OS revenue surged 18 percent, while dark horse Oracle leaped from ninth place to fourth, with a 7,683 percent growth in income.

In coming weeks Google plans to release Chrome OS with several notebook and netbook manufacturers set to release devices running the new OS.

One of the first manufacturers is thought to be Acer. Codenamed ZGB the new Chrome OS device will have a 1366 x 768 12 inch display and like their new Acer Android tablet users will be able to attach an external display to it via an HDMI port powered by an encoder chip from Chrontel.

The Acer device is set to be available on AMD’s Fusion netbook platform and using an alternate Atom processor.
