Microsoft Sells 60M Wndows 8

Absent from CES, Microsft is jumping up and down about Windows 8 sales instead.

Microsoft has sold 60 million licenses Windows 8 has sold to date, Windows Chief Marketing Officer and CFO Tami Reller announced at CES J.P. Morgan Tech Forum at CES 2013, yesterday.

The touch-based OS, designed for tablets, PC and phones which was panned by many tech writers, was launched in late October, along with a Microsft Suface tablet running Windows RT.

The 60m sales figure includes cumulative sales of Windows 8 upgrades and sales to PC makers like Toshiba, HP and Samsung for new devices, it said on its blog.

And there was plenty new Windows 8 tablets, Ultrabooks, laptops and PC’s being shown off at CES in Vegas this week, notably Panasonic 20″ tablet,  Lenovo’s 27″ horizontal table PC (transforms into a 27″ desktop), Toshiba’s Qosimo X875 with 1 TB storage), Samsung Series 7 Chronos and 7 Ultra Touch, Transformer Book TX300CA from ASUS.

Microsoft says it is on a “is a similar sales trajectory that we saw with Windows 7” – its most successful software release, which over 100 million licenses in the first six months.

but 60 million sales seems not all that shocking if you consider there are now more than 1,700 computer systems Windows 8 and RT software, with up to 800 more to follow, if Microsoft numbers are correct.

Microsoft also says its apps are on the up the Windows Store has quadrupled adn the number of downloads has passed the 100 million mark – two months after opening.
