More Connected Mobile Devices On Earth Than People

The latest stats from GSMA Intelligence shows over 7.22 billion mobile devices, surpassing the world’s current population of 7.19 billion people.

Although the number of mobile phones has surpassed the number of people in Australia, the same stat has now occurred for the entire planet.
GSMA Intelligence, the analyst arm of the GSM Alliance has data showing 7,229,812,000+ mobile connections, including M2M (machine to machine) devices, with the number accelerating rapidly in real time, as can be seen as the GSMA Intelligence site.

Unique mobile subscribers still has a long way to go, however, with just under 3.6 billion at time of publication, although the stats also show a total $1.1 Trillion revenue a year for FY 2013, with a global ARPU or average revenue per user of $12.15 per month.

The UK’s “The report claims that gadgets like tablets, smartphones and mobile phones are multiplying five times faster than world’s human population which is growing at a rate of about two people per second, or 1.2 percent annually.”

GSMA Intelligence also points out that “The rapid migration towards 4G-LTE in the world’s most advanced mobile markets is driving a surge in data usage, with 4G users typically consuming twice as much data per month as other users.”

Australia is on the verge of a massive LTE-A rollout, so data usage is likely to surge even faster, although Australians still patiently await mobile broadband pricing to drop far more substantially than it already has, although such price drops are still likely some time off into the future.
Unless, of course, Steve Perlman’s pCell technology from Artemis Networks see widespread rollouts in 2015 and over the next few years, which could well see mobile broadband prices drop to wired broadband pricing levels – a development which would be very welcome indeed.
