NBN To Reverse Rural Decline As OZ Gets Networked, Says Huawei

Internet will bring people back to the bush, say experts.

Broadband rollout will be “key” to reversal of the massive population exodus regional Australia has experienced in recent years, claims a new report by Telco Huawei.

The NB promises to connect 93 percent of the country with high speed internet and estimates 1.9 million new premises will be connected to the fibre once complete.

The infrastructure will bring about huge change in where we can choose to live, says experts who worked on the UK’s 21CN network, its NBN equivalent .

Re-population of rural areas will be one of the key outcomes of full
broadband coverage, enabling rural societies connect with the rest of
world not only socially but for business and other areas like
telehealth and education that  will enable rural
society prosper into the future.

“It’s not de-population, it?Is re-population,” believes Dr Williams.

Considering there will be no additional costs to consumers
for the broadband installation, it could ensure a mass take up amongst rural Aussies.

However, “we cannot measure success by access to broadband – the real goal must be use by people,” warned community expert Dr Tim Williams and author of the report Connecting Communities.

Huawei, who commissioned the research have been working with BT to deploy the 21CN.

“High-speed broadband is too significant to be left to geeks and engineers,” said Williams.

Because you can do a modern job, you can have modern services, you can
have the highest quality of life in those areas now that you’ve got
connectivity, we’re seeing a recovery of those areas – it?s particularly
important for the sustainability of regional economies.”

The rollout should engender not just a network, but a “networked society? across Australia, the report also warns.
