New 41 Megapixel Nokia Symbian Smartphone ‘Clunky & Heavy’

A 41-megapixel Nokia smartphone has been revealed with the device already being panned because it runs on the failed Nokia Symbian operating system and is “chunky & heavy”.The device that has more megapixel capability than the recently launched Nikon D8000 (which has a 36 megapixels) was revealed at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.

Nokia claims that their new 808 Pureview delivers enhanced low-light performance as well as superior image compression technology that allows users share the massive pictures that the device will be capable of shooting.

Nokia who are desperately trying to claw back market share has chosen to use their own Symbian operating system instead of the Microsoft’s Windows Phone software that the company is pushing in their new range of Lumia phones.

Symbian, which first appeared on Nokia phones in the 90s, is widely regarded as inferior to the app and social media-driven Windows Phone system analysts at the event told journalists. Questions have also been raised about the design and style of the phone.

Tony Cripps, a principal analyst with Ovum said “It’s a pity that Nokia was unable to combine the photographic prowess of the PureView 808 with the style of the Lumia 900.

“Such a device may well have been the first smartphone to truly deserve the title of ‘superphone’.”

Nokia claim the  808 will set a “new industry standard” for mobile imaging despite the fact that consumers by majority rejected past Nokia phones with superior camera capability in favour of an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone.

BBC’s technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said he expected some consumers would be surprised over the choice of platform.

“Nokia’s put this on a Symbian phone, which will seem strange to people,” he said.

“It’s also pretty chunky, pretty heavy – but it does take amazing pictures.”

Ironically there was not much mention of how the devices performs as a phone which was the same strategy that the company took in Australia when they launched their N8 smartphone that had 12 megapixels.
