New Cell Gaming Hub From Toshiba PS3 & XBox Threat

Toshiba is believed to be working on a gaming and multimedia console that will allow games originally developed for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 to be easily ported over to the Toshiba cell processor console which will also double as a home media hub.

The company, who will shortly launch a 55″ Cell Processor TV with a 3 terabyte hard drive, is believed to be exploring the gaming market with a new cell processor hub, that will run games set to be shown privately at this week’s CEATEC Show in Japan.

Toshiba Australia has also confirmed that they will launch their high end media centre notebook the Qosmio X500 on October 22nd. The gaming beast is set to be used for both online and application gaming.

The company will also show their new Regza Cell processor TV which is expected to go on sale in Australia next year and could cost up to $15,000.

The advantage that Toshiba have is the Cell Processor which was co-developed by Toshiba, Sony and IBM. The chip also powers Sony’s PlayStation 3 video game console and IBM’s high-end computer servers.

Now manufactured by Toshiba, the Japanese company believes that family gaming will move away from dedicated consoles to very fast media hubs that can process gaming applications, movies while delivering them to a display screen powered by a Cell processor. “This allows for better resolution and faster processing” said a Toshiba executive.

The new Cell Regza TV will come with a slimline box the size of a small personal video recorder. It will allow the TV to show up to eight channels at the same time and record up to 26 hours of video.

The attached device, which houses the Cell processors, has an Internet browser and a huge amount of power.

High end speakers, which run along the bottom of the new Cell TV screen, are comparable to those of high-end stereo systems.
