Fitbit whose products hold more than 60% of the fast growing Australian wearable technology market is set to launch the Surge fitness watch in Australia that is set to retail for around $295.
According to Scott Browning the Marketing Director at JB Hi Fi Fitbit “is a leader” in the wearable category. He told ChannelNews that the wearable category is “outperforming expectations” He said “We see significant growth ahead for this category and Fitbit is a market leader in the Fitbit category”.
At the weekend the giant Brookstone Stores leaked the new Fitbit watch when they posted marketing content ahead of the launch.
A pre-order page for the “super watch” went live on their website.
Surge is described as a fitness watch – not a smartwatch – with built-in GPS and a variety of sensors that can record your workouts and overall activity regardless of whether it’s linked up to a smartphone.
From the advertising it appears that Fitbit is going after runners in a big way with this device. User will be able to look back at split times and route history using the built in GPS, all without worrying about carrying around a phone in inclement weather.
It’s also been confirmed that the main display is a touchscreen that allows a user to swipe through key stats (steps taken, calories burned, heart rate, etc.) throughout the day.
Photos on the pre-order page offer a good sense of size and how Surge might look strapped to your wrist, and there’s even a short video outlining its core features.
