New Nikon D800 Cams Boast “Wold’s Highest” Pixel Count

Nikon has officially announced two new SLR cameras that boast the “world’s highest effective pixel count.”

Nikon’s New D800
The D800 and D800E feature 36.3 million pixels, which according to Nikon is the highest effective pixel count in the world.

Rendering these ginormous images is a new Expeed 3 image processing engine and a 91,000 pixel RGB sensor.

On board there are plenty of settings, starting with an ISO range from 50 to 25,600. Additional noteworthy features include Time Lapse shooting, high speed shooting (at approximately 6fps), an on board Viewfinder, and a 51 point autofocus system.

The cameras share a body that can withstand dust and water without sacrificing peripheral connectivity, such as dual memory card slots (CompactFlash and SD cards) and a SuperSpeed USB3.0 port.

On the video front, both cams will record movies in Full HD resolution (1080p) in either FX- or DX- based formats. Nikon claim “the FX-based movie format offers a shallow depth-of-field with an emphasis on blur characteristics, while the DX-based movie format brings subjects closer when lenses with short focal lengths are used.”

Nikon’s D800E
Essentially the D800 and the D800E share the same DNA, but like siblings their makeup subtly differs. The D800E uses an optical low-pass filter (through a Nikkor lens) to strike photodiodes directly, producing greater resolution. The result is a shooting experience optimal for landscape pics, advertising and artistic photography, and a price estimated at “a couple of hundred dollars” dearer.

Unfortunately Nikon Australia haven’t set pricing nor availability yet for the Australian market, but feel free to come back soon for an update.
