New Nokia Smartphone But No Carrier Deal

Nokia Australia, which is fast losing shelf space with carriers and retailers, has mounted a major marketing campaign for its new Nokia N900, with developers being urged to develop apps and content for the new phone.Competing head-on with operating systems from Apple, Google and Microsoft, Nokia is pushing the N900 as its Smartphone offering, up against Smartphones from HTC with its Windows and Google Android ranges, the Apple iPhone and a range of offerings from LG and Samsung.

Built into the new phone is the MeeGo Linux mobile OS, which is a joint venture between Nokia and Intel.

Launched at the Nokia Developer conference in Sydney attended by over 300 aspiring developers, the N900 will go on sale in April 2010.

The N900 has a 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen panel with a slide-out QWERTY keypad. The processor is an ARM Cortex-A8 processor with OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration, 32GB of storage and support for Adobe Flash and AJAX. It will also run Firefox mobile.

It is also the last time that the Linux-based Maemo 5 OS will be seen inside a Nokia product after the company recently announced that it had scrapped Maemo and would merge the OS with Intel’s Moblin OS.

No pricing has yet been announced. ChannelNews also believes that no carrier has yet agreed to launch the product in Australia. “We are still discussing distribution with carriers,” a senior Nokia executive said today.
