New PS3 Firmware Upscales DVDs To HD

Sony has announced the latest firmware update for Playstation 3, which it says will upscale DVDs, Playstation and Playstation 2 games to 1080p resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV.

The PS and PS2 games which are compatible with the Aussie version of the PS3 will be able to be upscaled along with your DVD collection (provided you have a high definition TV).

The Version 1.80 firmware will be available to Australian customers, “this evening” according to Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson, Adrian Christie.

PSP owners will also be able Remote Play on their device via the internet, giving them access to their PS3 anywhere with a broadband connection. This feature, however, requires not only a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 but also PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of this month.

The new PS3 firmware will also allow users on a home network to seamlessly view and play images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, the company said.

Sony says its firmware update reinforces “PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the living room.”
