Nintendo Motion Blows Set To Hurt Crippled Sony

Reeling from Billion dollar losses, Sony Computer Entertainment and their struggling Playstation brand, is again confronting an onslaught of new games and hardware from Nintendo, who last month sold a million units of their highly popular DSi handheld in the US market alone. Among Nintendo’s weapons is a new motion controller.

Reeling from Billion dollar losses, Sony Computer Entertainment and their struggling Playstation brand, is again confronting an onslaught of new games and hardware from Nintendo, who last month sold a million units of their highly popular DSi handheld in the US market alone.

Nintendo who have 90% of the handheld gaming market in Australia and over 60% of the console market with their Wii has announced the second instalment of Wii Sports called Wii Sports Resort. The first version was credited with massive sales of the Nintendo Wii during the peak Xmas New Year sales period.

Available from 23 July 2009. Wii Sports Resort includes new sports and a more precise way to play, with each Wii Sports Resort packaged with a single new Wii MotionPlus accessory.

Available from 11 June 2009, the New Nintendo Wii MotionPlus accessory connects to the Wii Remote and gives players new levels of precision and performance when used with specially designed games such as Wii Sports Resort.

In an effort to compete with Nintendo’s highly popular motion controller Sony is tipped to trying to launch a new motion sensing controller at the upcoming E3 gaming Show in June 2009 in the USA.

Nintendo claim that the beach themed Wii Sports Resort takes the fun and intuitive controls of the original Wii Sports to the next level with a new set of entertaining and physically immersive activities. Players can cruise on a water scooter, duel with swords, toss flying discs to a cute Mii-like dog and much more, and all with the deep control enhancements of Wii MotionPlus.

Wii Sports Resort AU SRP $99.95 / NZ SRP $129.00 (includes Wii MotionPlus) Wii MotionPlus AU SRP $29.95 / NZ SRP $39.00

Nintendo had the four top-selling games in April, including “Wii Fit,” which sold 471,000 copies, and “Pokemon Platinum,” with sales of 433,000. Electronic Arts Inc.’s “Godfather II” was the fifth-best seller, with 155,000 in sales for the Xbox.

Last week, Nintendo said slowing demand for the Wii may lead to a 12 percent drop in operating profit, missing the estimates of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Sony forecast a second straight full-year loss yesterday. The Tokyo-based company expects to sell 13 million PS3s this year, half the 26 million Wii consoles that Nintendo projects.
