Nokia is on the verge of abandoning Symbian, but not quite yet as it throws a bone to consumers using older Nokia models with a software upgrade.
While Nokia is set to swap its Symbian operating system in favour of Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS, the phone company that is teetering on the edge of mobile popularity is giving consumers of pre-Symbian^3 phones software updates to show its ongoing support of the platform.
The upgrades come for selected phones that running Symbian 3.2 and Symbian 5.0, according to the official Nokia blog, including models like the E72 and C6-00. The upgrade, to be rolled out in stages, includes an updated browser, Ovi Maps and other small features including new emoticons for messages.

The browser upgrade, v7.3 of Nokia’s system, is the same as the browser that is set to come with newer Symbian phones running ‘Symbian Anna’ which are yet to be released. Nokia is yet to release any Windows-based phone despite the deal it brokered with Microsoft, instead maintaining its Symbian OS throughout this year, as well as new phones running MeeGo.
