Notebook Sales Help Drive Q1 Aussie PC Market Growth

Healthy notebook sales helped deliver 12 per cent year-on-year growth in the Australian PC market in the 2015 first quarter, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), with consumers migrating back from tablets to notebooks. The positive start to the year continues the growth trend from last year’s Windows XP migration, the IDC stated, with higher spending in the consumer segment driving growth.

The IDC noted convertible notebooks, allowing multi-purpose usability, were especially popular in the first quarter.

“The currency fluctuation impact on PC sales was minimal as vendors initiated aggressive price promotion campaigns and pushed large volumes of entry-level devices into the market,” Sagar Raghavendra, IDC client devices analyst, commented of the first quarter results.

“Microsoft’s BingBook program was also a contributing factor to higher notebook shipments.”

HP maintained top position in the market with a 23 per cent market share, followed by Apple and Lenovo, commanding 20 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively; Dell (12 per cent) and Acer (9 per cent) rounded out the top five.

The IDC noted that Lenovo’s foray into the consumer space in last year’s fourth quarter has reaped benefits, with Lenovo seeing exponential growth in the segment.

The consumer segment grew 20 per cent year-on-year, however the education segment declined.

“The slowdown in education shipments was likely due to the changing ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) policy,” Raghavendra commented. “With product purchases now decentralized in several private education institutions, parents, not schools, are buying notebooks for their children.”

In the enterprise segment, large and very large enterprise shipment declined as part of OPEX cost-cutting, however small and medium businesses, riding on promotional offers, posted steady year-on-year growth.
