Optus To ‘Fly’ NBN Satellites

Up, up and away: Telco No. 2 to operate new NBN satellites, delivering Internet to 200,000 customers


NBN Co’s two new satellites, due to launch into orbit in 2015, will deliver high speed Internet to 200,000 premises in remote Australia. 

Announced today, Optus satellite have signed five-year agreement with NBN Co to operate the new Ka-band satellites. 

Optus will provide tracking, telemetry and control services. There is also opportunity for extension of the deal for up to 15 years. 

The 5-year deal is said to be worth $9 million. 

The new NBN Co satellites will be controlled from Optus’ satellite ground station in Belrose, a northern suburb of Sydney. 
The telco already supplies managed services for NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service. 

“Optus looks forward to working with NBN Co to fly these satellites and assist it in meeting the significant demand for high speed broadband services in regional and remote Australia,” said  Paul Sheridan, Vice President of Satellite at Optus.  

The Singapore-owned telco currently has five satellites in orbit with another to launch in 2014, providing services to corporate and government customers.
