Did the earth move for you? You may not have noticed it, but Geoscience Australia says the continent is moving about seven centimetres north annually, apparently due to tectonic movements.This is said to be causing
problems for global and local navigation satellite systems, which differ in
determining longitude and latitude by as much as one metre.
Geoscience Australia is addressing the problem by updating geocentric data that
was last changed in 1994. Since then Australia is said to have moved 1.5 metres
northward.
The changes are important for bringing maps, GPS and other systems up to date,
especially because of the rapid development of driverless cars and artificial
intelligence systems.
They will come into effect at the start of 2017, when local coordinates will be
shifted further north by 1.8 metres, hopefully allowing Australia’s local
coordinates and the Earth’s global coordinates to align in 2020.
