An unnamed 20-year-old Australian man has been charged with infecting more than 3000 computers around the world with a virus designed to capture banking and credit card data. He also allegedly used 74,000 PCs round the world as botnets to launch distributed denial of service attacks if proved, the biggest hacking case ever uncovered in Australia.
The man, whose name will not be released until he appears in an Adelaide court on September 4, has been charged with a number of computer offences that carry prison terms of up to 10 years, said South Australia state police Detective Supt. Jim Jeffery.
The arrest followed a three-month investigation involving state and federal cybercrime teams, including the SA Police electronic crime section and Australian Federal Police.
