Amidst industry debate over what constitutes Full HD, Panasonic has launched two new camcorders which can record 1920 x 1080p at 24 frames per second.
Recently SmartHouse questioned whether camcorders or televisions which could only display or record at 1080i (rather than 1080p) could be considered as truly Full HD. Now Panasonic has come back with two new models that can record 1920 x 1080 progressive.

The lower end model is a hybrid SD/hard disk drive model. The higher-end SD 9 is the replacement to the brand’s SD5, and is lighter and smaller than its predecessor. It comes bundled with 32GB of flash memory (initially in the form of 2x16GB cards), a DVD burner, HDMI cable and editing software for $2,299.
Also new is the SW20, a waterproof, dustproof, shockproof camcorder that is designed for the adventurous, it comes with a 4GB SDHC card.
“Panasonic has a history of ruggedizing technology, most notably with our Toughbook PCs. We are now bringing our Toughbook heritage into camcorders with the SW20,” said Mudge.
A key feature of both the new camcorder and still camera range is portability. The S8 camcorder weighs 180g and is the size of a small digital camera. Panasonic says the camcorder is designed to be small enough for people to carry around all the time for impromptu video capture. It carries an RRP of $549.
The company said its new 32GB SDHC card will be available in May to complement the launch of its new still and video camera range.
