Panasonic Unveils Wide-Angle Touchscreen Camera

Panasonic is set to release the Lumix DMC-FX520, a digital camera that comes with a 3-inch touch-screen LCD, 5x optical zoom, 10.1-megapixel sensor, and features a 25mm mega wide-angle Leica DC lens.

The DMC-FX520 joins the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX36 in offering a 25mm mega wide-angle lens. The wide perspective lets users capture broad landscapes and architecture with ease, and also allows users to get closer to the subject.

Panasonic’s Category Marketing Manager for Mobile AV, Alistair Robins said, “The DMC-FX520’s touch-screen operation provides customers with a new interface that will prove extremely intuitive for image capture, playback and photo organisation.”

The DMC-FX520 has a hybrid control system that combines joystick control with touch-screen operation. Basic settings can be controlled by the joystick, and users can make fine adjustments by touch using their finger or supplied stylus. In manual exposure mode, adjustments can be made using an on-screen slider to adjust aperture and shutter speeds.  Users can also set the auto focus and exposure in the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject while recording, says Panasonic.

In playback mode, a new ‘Easy Organisation’ menu allows photos to be selected and viewed by scrolling through the thumbnails located below the main window. Users can then edit the titles using the same touch menu interface.

Also new to the DMC-FX520 is Auto Focus (AF) tracking, a feature that tracks the photo subject even if it moves after the AF is set – especially helpful for capturing active children or pets.

Panasonic’s iA (Intelligent Auto) mode is an advanced system of technologies that engage automatically, so the user can capture images as they happen without having to change settings.  Users can now go a step further and easily set auto focus and exposure by simply touching the screen.

The DMC-FX520 will be available in Australia in May, priced at $769.
