Phablet Fight! LG Kick Off 5″ Samsung Rival

LG has restarted its battle with Samsung, this time its phablets.
The Koreans today unveiled 4G Optimus Vu ‘phablet’ (combination of phone and tablet) running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, to rival Samsung’s newly launched 5.3″ Galaxy Note (coming to Voda soon).

The 5″ Optimus Vu IPS display (1024×768) means a super bright screen and runs on a powerful 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 32GM internal memory and is 4G ready.

However, it looks like the Samsung may have one up on the Vu already – given that the LG phablet only runs Android 2.3 while the Note will be powered by Android 4.0.

However, LG says an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is “in the works.”

Its phablet also features HDMI connections to hook up to a TV and is DLNA ready, and comes with an 8-megapixel camera with AF, LED Flash (rear) and 1.3MP (front).

Vu offers tablet-like viewing with smartphone portability and is a multimedia lover’s dream, says LG, with a 4:3 aspect ratio screen meaning its easier to view online content like movies or magazines and is ultra mobile at only 8.5mm thin.

“The Optimus Vu: was designed to maximize what customers could do with a smart-phone,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO, LG Mobile.

“By offering an optimal 4:3 ratio viewing experience, 5-inch display combined with superfast LTE technology, Optimus Vu: is just one example of what we can achieve when we combine our best technology with customer needs.”

The 5″ device also comes with a built-in QuickClip hotkey that allows users to capture screenshots and memos and Rubberdium pen to take notes, just like the Galaxy Note’s stylus pen.

Vu also suits professionals and boasts Polaris Office which allows users to open documents, spreadsheet or presentations on the go.

The Optimus Vu is also the slimmest among all LTE phones in the market despite the large 2,080mAh battery

The Optimus Vu will hit Korea in March and elsewhere thereafter, although no word when it will hit Australia.
