The board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, rejected the proposal for the new domain name suffix, called dot-xxx, by a 9-5 vote. In Canberra, Australia’s Minister for Communications and IT, Helen Coonan, who has publicly opposed the domain, applauded the decision yesterday.
“This is a positive outcome that has prevented the creation of a domain that could have acted as a haven for illegal and offensive content,” Coonan said.
“ICANN’s decision is also a reassurance that this body, responsible for overseeing the administration of domains at a global level, has robust decision-making processes that take account of stakeholders’ input.”
