PS Vita Sales Flat-Line, In Need Of Vita-Support

Sony has set a new record this week. But where are the bells, balloons and whistles? Ohh, it’s that kind of record. Awkward.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita has hit an all-time low by setting the worst sales week in Japan’s history. Dry figures represent the little intrigue consumers have in the device, but also the stale climate the gaming market as a whole is enduring following the boom in smartphone games and apps.

The Vita is but a star amidst a studded cast of poor performing consoles, with SlashGear reporting the console sold 8,931 Vita units in Japan (which is unofficially known as the tech-capital of Earth). Compared to the week before, sales dropped a whopping 26%, marking it the lowest Vita sales week since its Japan launch.

In the US, video game sales dropped 25% and that’s in spite of the popular Mass Effect 3 launching. Vita sales are also expected to perform below expectations in the States.

Although the Vita represents the cutting edge in portable gaming, many believe its lacklustre game ecosystem is hindering its sale performance. In fact, no Vita games are in Japan’s 20 top-selling video game titles.
