“We have agreed to join forces with Luxottica,” Google announced on a
blog post.
The Luxottica Group also owns glasses brands Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette. Google Glass, which has smartphone-like features including Google Maps, Google Now in a specs format, which you speak to.
Google Glass currently costs whopping costs USD$1,500 + tax in the US, and has yet to hit the mainstream.
Luxottica will bring design and manufacturing expertise to the mix, and more Glass style choices, according to the blog.
Google will also use the group’s retail and wholesale distribution channels to make Glass technology widely available, giving it the mass retail push it needs.The group has 5,000 stores in the US alone.
“You’re not going to see Glass on your favorite Oakleys or Ray-Bans tomorrow, but today marks the start of a new chapter in Glass’s design. glasses are a reflection of function and fashion,” the tech giant says.
“We see Glass as the next chapter in this long story. Light, simple and modular, Glass introduces new functionality as your glasses get smarter – but bringing your own style to Glass is just as important. “
In January, it launched four prescription glasses with the Glass technology called Titanium Collection.
