Record Run: Apple Reportedly Gearing Up For Biggest iPhone Release Yet

Apple is reportedly planning a record production run of its upcoming next-gen iPhone models. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Apple is asking suppliers to manufacture between 85 and 90 million units combined of two new iPhone models by December 31, citing people familiar with the matter, compared to its initial production run last year for its current generation iPhones of 70 to 80 million units.

The screen sizes, 4.7″ and 5.5″, will be the same as the current generation iPhone models, the WSJ reported.

The WSJ report follows a report last week that production of the next-gen iPhones has already commenced.

Bloomberg had also reported people with knowledge of the matter as stating that the upcoming iPhones will feature Apple’s Force Touch technology. Force Touch tech, featured on the Apple Watch, can distinguish between a light tap and a deep press, which Apple states triggers “access to a range of contextually specific controls”.

The WSJ has reported changes in the next-gen models will be less noticeable than last year’s models, with Apple to keep the screen resolution about the same, while it may offer an additional colour for the iPhone’s casing, citing people familiar with the matter.

Apple has in recent years both announced and subsequently launched its new-release iPhone models in September.
