Tim Barnes the new marketing manager of home entertainment at LG threw a party last night with a very cool Mark Webber who put on a demonstration of driving without a steering wheel using the new Microsoft XBox 360 Kinect technology.
LG, a sponsor of the Red Bull Formula One team threw the gig to demonstrate their new 3D TV’s that come with the George Lucas endorsed THX certification.
Dressed in jeans and dark t-shirt, Webber ambled casually from behind a screen in the iMax Theatre’s Ice Bar, glanced at the 3D television screen on display, nodded at the assembled guests and perched on a stool.
Mark Webber, leading driver in this year’s Formula One motor racing – rather than the new 3D tellies and Blu-ray drives – was the star attraction at last night’s media launch.
Webber chatted amiably about his experiences, the tracks, the drivers and the technologies, admitted it was rare to find himself in Sydney these days, and confided he planned to spend Saturday at the MCG watching the AFL grand final replay, then the Rugby League grand final on TV (hopefully in 3D on an LG).
On Tuesday he’ll be on his way to Japan for the next round in F1 – and hopefully a win that would all but seal the driver’s championship.
Webber donned the glasses to watch a 3D replay of what appeared to be practice at last week’s Singapore GP, where he finished third. It was shown on LG’s new 60-inch 3D plasma TV, which comes with THX certification from George Lucas, and can upgrade 2D films to some sort of 3D. It has a built-in “Netcast” Internet connection to BigPond for streaming on-demand movies. Suggested price: $3499; a 50-incher is $2499.
Also on show were two new Blu-ray player-recorders, both 3D-capable and with Netcast. The $799 HR558D model can record onto a 250GB hard drive; the $999 HR559D has a 500GB drive.
He also danced in front of an LG 3D TV connected to the new Microsoft XBox 360 with the Kinect gear there was also shouts of “impressive” when he took to a car racing game using his arms to simulate a steering wheel.
Kinect works with an Xbox 360 and has a unique sensor system that transforms full body movement into game play. Webber was a natural when it came to driving and dancing said the experts.
