Global PC shipments slumped 9.5 per cent year-on-year in the 2015 second quarter to 68.4 million units, according to Gartner, the steepest PC shipment decline since the 2013 third quarter.In releasing its results for the quarter, Gartner has however emphasised that the market, which also declined in the first quarter of the year, is in temporary decline, with current inhibitors not expected to change the market’s structure.
Gartner additionally expects the market to return to “slow and steady growth” in 2016.
“The price hike of PCs became more apparent in some regions due to a sharp appreciation of the US dollar against local currencies,” Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa commented. “The price hike could hinder PC demand in these regions.
“Secondly, the worldwide PC market experienced unusually positive desk-based growth last year due to the end of Windows XP support. After the XP impact was phased out, there have not been any major growth drivers to stimulate a PC refresh.
“Lastly, the Windows 10 launch scheduled for 3Q15 has created self-regulated inventory control. PC vendors and the channels tried clearing inventory as much as possible before the Windows 10 launch.”
The International Data Corporation (IDC) has also recorded a slump in PC sales, finding worldwide PC shipments totalled 66.1 million units in the quarter, a year-on-year decline of 11.8 per cent.
The IDC also noted the impact of the end of Windows XP support in contributing to the year-on-year decline, channels reducing inventory ahead of the release of Windows 10, along with the impact of weaker exchange rates.
Gartner figures show that while Lenovo maintained its number one PC vendor position, it recorded a year-on-year decline in shipments for the first time since the 2013 second quarter, while HP, in second spot, also experienced a shipment decline after five consecutive quarters of growth.
Gartner figures show Lenovo captured a 19.7 per cent share of the market, while its year-on-year growth declined 6.8 per cent, with HP securing a 17.4 per cent market share and recording a 9.5 per cent decline in growth.
Dell took out third position with a 14 per cent market share and recording a 4.9 per cent decline in growth, with Asus, in fourth position, securing a 6.8 per cent share of the market and recording a 10.2 per cent decline in growth, while Acer Group, in fifth position, captured a 6.7 per cent market share and recorded a 20.2 per cent decline in growth.
Gartner has forecast PC shipments will decline 4.4 per cent in 2015.
