Samsung 10.1″ Sun Power Netbook Sees Light ..In Russia

Forget electricity – this nifty netbook is powered by the sun. And it comes with a built-in sun screen.

The 10.1″ netbook – the world first solar powered device of its size – contains a dual core Intel Atom processor and Samsungs  1024×600 SuperBright LED screen with anti-reflective coating will protect against sun glare.

The screen brightness is 300 nits NC215S, which is 50% brighter than other notebooks, say its maker. It also has GMA 3150 integrated graphics core, 1GB gig of RAM, three USB ports, 4-in-1 (SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC)  and runs Windows 7.

For every two hours charged in sunlight it will run for one hour and will charge automatically  thanks to its solar panel mounted in its front panel, meaning you could compute in rural outback conditions without worrying about failing battery.

However, the charging time is dependent on the on the intensity of solar radiation, meaning it could work far longer say in WA scorching sun than Melbourne’s often dreary drizzle.

It also runs Samsung PowerPlus standard battery system which allows longer battery life than conventional system and is is designed for 1000 charge cycles over  three years on its 6 cell system (40 W).

Weighting 1.3kg the NC215S is designed for the elements and wont suffer from sunburn either with its with tough exterior casing.

But wait for it, Samsung are launching the device in Russia, ironic considering its often sub freezing temperatures, and will set you back 13999 roubles (around AU $470).

Samsung solar netbook will be first released there and in the US in August. No word when it will hit Aussie shores just yet.
