Samsung: Collaboration Will See IoT Universe Grow

The vast potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) can be realised by greater openness and collaboration across industries, according to Samsung president and CEO BK Yoon, who has detailed Samsung’s plans for the upcoming IoT era at CES 2015.Samsung is positioning itself to play an active role in the growing IoT market, which the International Data Corporation late last year forecast to grow from US$1.3 trillion in 2013 to US$3.04 trillion in 2020, comprising approximately 30 billion connected “things”.

At CES, Yoon announced Samsung will invest more than US$100 million in its developer community in 2015, while over the next few years it will accelerate its adoption of IoT technology.

By 2017, all Samsung televisions will be IoT devices, while in five years all Samsung hardware will be IoT-ready.

“The Internet of Things has the potential to transform our society, economy and how we live our lives,” Yoon commented.

“It is our job to pull together – as an industry, and across different sectors – to make true on the promise of the Internet of Things.”

However, no single company will dominate the IoT era, with Samsung stating for the IoT to succeed “companies across all industries will have to collaborate to build the necessary infrastructure and develop the many tailored IoT services that can meet the needs of consumers”.

“I know in my heart that neither one single company nor one industry alone can deliver the benefits of the Internet of Things,” Yoon commented.

“To create this IoT universe, we have to see the potential of the Internet of Things across all kinds of industries. Only if we work together can we improve people’s lives.”

Highlighting Samsung’s commitment to the IoT, Yoon noted that expanding the devices that make up the IoT ecosystem, along with the components that power them, “is the first step in fulfilling the promise” of the IoT.

“Samsung already has a broad range of IoT devices,” Yoon commented. “Last year, Samsung delivered more than 665 million products, and this number is set to increase.

“We have already begun to unlock the value hidden in connected devices and all the everyday objects around us.”
