Samsung Provides Update On Fire-Risk Washing Machine Recall

Samsung has today provided a progress summary for its ongoing product recall of six top-loader washing machines models.Samsung’s recall progress summary figures show that as of November 19, 97,099 units out of a total of 144,451 units have been recalled. The percentage complete now stands at 67.2 per cent.

A recall of the models was originally initiated in April 2013, while an ongoing campaign has been encouraging consumers with affected washing machines to take action.

In June, the NSW government issued a recall of the machines, with the Minister responsible for Fair Trading Victor Dominello commenting at the time that consumers should be mindful of the potential dangers, stating they should “take action and check the model numbers of their Samsung top-loader washing machines”.

Samsung’s figures show 33,776 units reworked, exchanged or refunded out of a total of 53,376 units sold in NSW, 24,807 out of 39,001 in Queensland, 18,156 out of 26,952 in Victoria, 7,545 out of 14,483 in Western Australia, 4,386 out of 3,162 in South Australia (Samsung notes it is possible that through distribution channels among retailers stock may have moved state to state), and 2,667, 1,323 and 693 out of 7,477 in Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory, respectively.

Samsung has provided the information to
NSW Fair Trading as part of its ongoing compliance with the notice
issued under section 22 of the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004
(NSW).

“Samsung continues to encourage customers to check the model details of their top-loader Samsung washing machine, to determine if their model is impacted by the product safety recall,” Samsung states.

The affected models are:

SW75V9WIP/XSA
SW65V9WIP/XSA
SW70SPWIP/XSA
SW80SPWIP/XSA
WA85GWGIP/XSA
WA85GWWIP/XSA
