Samsung Tipped To Show Google TV Next Week

Samsung Australia is believed to be close to launching Google TV in Australia with the real possibility emerging that the dual-core TV will be shown next week when Samsung reveal their new range of Smart TVs.Two major retailers have told Smarthouse Samsung is set to reveal a Google TV offering that will include access to content not previously available in Australia. The retailers claim the new TV will go on sale in the second half of 2012.

Initially Samsung, who failed to show their Google TV offering at the recent CES Show in Las Vegas, despite announcing they were working with Google, said that they had no intention of launching a Google TV in Australia.

A Samsung source said today “Watch this space, next week will be an interesting week”.

A mass retailer who recently met with Samsung said “There is definitely a Google TV coming, Samsung has been talking to retailers about sizes for the device”.

A senior AV executive at LG said today “There is definitely a buzz among retailers that Samsung Australia is set to launch Google TV shortly. We have heard the rumour and so have other suppliers”.

If Samsung does launch a Google TV in Australia they will be the first Samsung subsidiary in the world to show a Samsung TV running the Google TV offering.

At the recent CES Show LG revealed their new Google TV offering which is set to go on sale in the USA shortly; however, the local subsidiary of LG has said that they will not launch a Google TV offering this year.

Recently the organisers of the V8 Supercar races claimed that Google was attempting to ink a $300 million five-year deal for the international digital rights for Australia’s V8 Supercar series up against the Ten and Seven networks.

V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane, who has a reputation for pumping up the value of the rev-head sport, confirmed he has held discussions with Google, however it is not known whether Cochrane approached Google or Google approached him.

Establishing the Google TV platform has not been easy for the search company. One maker of Google TV set-top boxes, Logitech, pulled out late last year after losing US$100 million on the project. However at the CES show in Las Vegas in January, Sony revealed that it planned to offer “Google TV-powered products”, presumably including TV sets and Blu-ray drives, in “several countries round the world in 2012”.

Samsung was not available to comment.
