Samsung To Dominate Tablets, Smartphones In 2011

Samsung has high hopes for its tablets and smartphones this year, expecting to almost triple 2010 smartphone sales figures.Samsung expect to sell more than 60 million smartphones this year and is planning to introduce new touch-screen tablets on top of its Galaxy Tab to exploit the growing market.

Samsung holds pole position in its native Korea’s market for tablets and smartphones but abroad it faces a dominant Apple with its flagship iPad and iPhone products.

Samsung’s ace-in-the-hole to steal Apple market share this year is its spread across operating platforms. Its most popular Galaxy series phones and tablets are capitalising on Google’s expanding reach over the portables market (even in the face of Apple’s iOS), and could boost Samsung sales over the year. Samsung have also spread onto Windows Mobile as well as its own operating system, Bada.

“Upping our competitiveness in applications and content is crucial for us to improve our smartphones. We will continue to invest in our four-major content hubs (Readers, Media, Social and Music) and strengthen our collaboration with developers and encourage them to produce premium content,” said Samsung Electronics’ head of mobile business, Shin Jong-kyun.

Spreading across the operating system platforms puts Samsung in a position to capitalise on each platform’s app store.
