Samsung To Take On Sony With New 1080p HD OLED TVs

Samsung, who is currently taking Sony on with a new range of LED TVs is now set to tighten the screws even further with a new range of wafer thin OLED HD TV’s which will go into production within weeks.

The new models will range from 14″ monitors to 31″ OLED HD TV’s. Sony who are struggling under a mountain of losses has already launched a $6,999, 11″ OLED TV. However, Samsung executives have said that their new 31″ model will retail for half the price that Sony Australia are trying to sell their 11″ model for.

The Korean Company says that their OLED models are “production-ready,” and will complement new pure LED TV’s that Samsung will launch later this year in Australia.

Last night Samsung said that their new OLED TV’s will be the first-ever OLED set to produce a native 1080p resolution and will have particularly high image quality: it manages 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It will also be thinner than LCDs at just 8.9mm (0.35in) deep.

The new 31″ HD TV could well be in Australia by Xmas or early in 2009 according to Samsung executives as it will be mass produced using a “full metal mask” technique. It is not known when the 14″ OLED model will be released.

Sony had hoped to have the OLED market to themselves claim Analysts now both Samsung and LG are getting ready to launch new OLED TV line-up’s in a move that will hurt the cash strapped Sony.
