“Selfie sticks”: they were out in their numbers at CES 2015, and have since enjoyed a wave of media attention, well and truly solidifying the term in the popular lexicon.Whereas once, the process of taking a “selfie” (taking a photo of yourself) involved an outstretched arm with smartphone or camera in hand and finger on the button, now the art form of the selfie has well and truly evolved.
Indeed, selfie sticks have effectively taken a lot of the work out of taking a selfie.
Essentially, a selfie stick is a pole with an attachment for a smartphone or camera at one end. Users attach their device to the pole, and then can gather distance and leverage in order to click their desired selfie.
With smartphones now being built with specialised selfie capabilities, allowing users to take photos via voice and gesture command, there is no need to be reaching for camera buttons, making the selfie stick the perfect accessory for some.
And while at its most basic level, the selfie stick is little more than a stick with an attachment for a device at one end, various add-ons have in turn brought it to a whole new level.
Take, for example, Kaiser Baas’ Selfie Pole, designed to pair with an Android or iOS device via Bluetooth, allowing users to take photos by pressing a button on the pole.
The Selfie Pole features an easy-handle grip and extension arm, along with a rechargeable battery, which Kaiser Baas states will deliver 500-plus shots off a single charge.
Meanwhile, GoPro’s 3-Way has multiple functions, and can be used as a camera grip, extension arm or tripod.
The 3-Way features a folding arm, which GoPro states makes it easy for taking selfies without the mount appearing in the shot.
Selfie sticks are clearly in demand, and interest in the new camera accessory may not even have yet peaked.
CES certainly demonstrated they are a hot new item.
Whether this time next year selfie sticks will be attracting as much attention, or if in fact they have by then become the norm, only time will tell.
