German headphone Company Sennheiser is really “pissed”, in fact they have gone as far as describing Chinese manufacturers who counterfeit their products as “social parasites”.In Australia fake Sennheiser headphones are available via the Internet, eBay and a variety of weekend markets said Syntec Marketing Manager Wayn Farren, the distributor of Sennheiser products.
The brand, who has had a stellar run in Australia and are a big money earner for retailers like JB HI Fi, yesterday called a press conference in China to reveal how they intend to take on the counterfeiters with the launch of new authentication label technology for retail packaging.
Consumers who buy the “real thing,” claim Sennheiser executives, will get a shiny Tesa PrioSpot authenticity label plus a “fool-proof” online look-up system for their new headphones.
The former President of Corporate Services, Volker Batels, claims there are several visible and invisible features and that consumers should check that they are buying a genuine product prior to purchase.
Wayne Farren said “If the price of a Sennheiser headphone is too good to be true there is every chance that it is a fake. In Australia fake headphones are turning up on Internet trader’s web sites, eBay and at street markets. When the consumer gets one of these devices home and discover that it delivers appalling sound it reflects on Sennheiser as a brand.”
With the new authenticity label there is also a QR code, plus its corresponding label ID printed below the foil, and scanning the former or entering the latter on qr-sennheiser.com returns a virtual copy of the foil label plus a visual description.
If what you have matches the label on the screen then you are okay.
But if the code has been looked up many times already, the website will also give you a warning and chances are the label has been duplicated, so potential buyers should always check this before handing the money over.
Marc Vincent, the company’s President of Greater China, aims to have this “urgent project” covering most products by the end of this year. “We have been fighting counterfeits for five years with some result, but now we have officially declared war on counterfeiting,” Mr. Vincent said in a stern voice. “Manufacturers of counterfeit products are social parasites. They really damage our reputation.”
