The company has showcased a prototype of its 26-inch LCD Aquos TV that can be powered entirely by the sun. The prototype is claimed to be so energy efficient that it can be powered from a single solar panel, despite having a 26 inch screen, according to endgadget.com.

According to the report, the TV has a contrast ratio of 10000:1 and a 20 mm thick display panel and requires about 30 per cent less power than regular LCD TVs and better still, it chews up only 25 per cent of the power of a conventional CRT TV.

The power comes from one of Sharp’s triple-junction thin-film solar cell modules, which are about the same size as the television’s screen, according to the report.

The company says it plans to market the LCD and the energy system as a pair but did not give a date for mass production.
