Sharp, who is a worldwide leader in the development of LCD and LED TV technology used by several manufacturers including Sony in their high end Bravia sets, is set to launch a new range of TVs in Australia that incorporate a recently developed TV technology called Quatron.
The TVs, which will be on sale by Xmas in Australia, include the new Quatron 3D LED LCD panels. Quatron LCDs use four colours instead of just three (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow). The new Quatron TVs will be available in sizes up to 60 inches and will be available with active-shutter glasses for 3D images.
Mark Beard, Marketing Director at Sharp Australia, said that that their 3D panels will offer high brightness and low crosstalk when compared to other LCDs. However, he didn’t say when they would start delivering the panels to retailers.
Seen as a premium brand, Sharp owns several LED TV patents and has recently won several patent cases in the USA.
The Japanese company believes that their new technology delivers a “significantly superior TV picture over what is being offered by Sony, who will not have access to the Sharp-developed technology.
They claim that their technologically superior yellow, gold, and brass colour renditions expand the pixel colour gamut to include the yellow pixel.
Traditional RBG colour systems use a 24 bit per pixel model where each of the three primary colours contains up to 256 various shades resulting in about 16 million available colours. Adding the 4th colour supposedly catapults the number of available colours to more than a trillion.
Built into the high end Sharp TVs is a 2.1-channel audio subsystem with eight loudspeakers, a USB storage-based video recorder, Wi-Fi upgradeability and a slew of Web services.
It is tipped that four models will be available in Australia, including 40, 46, 52 and 60 inch models. SmartHouse first saw this technology at the 2010 CES Show in Las Vegas and it was impressive. When compared to offerings from Samsung, Sony and LG, the picture image delivered to the screen appeared to be sharper and have more depth to the picture.
