Shock iPhone Siri Hack (For Android)

Its official, Siri has been cracked…and could be used on Android devices, from a Samsung Galaxy S II to an Acer Iconia tablet. French app developers, Applidium, have just cracked the code on Apple’s much hailed voice activated personal assistant, Siri, introduced in October on the iPhone 4S by fiddling around with protocosl and the way Siri communicates with Apple servers.

Hey Siri, how might Apple react to you working on Androids?

“Today, we managed to crack open Siri’s protocol. As a result, we are able to use Siri’s recognition engine from any device. That means anyone could now write an Android app that uses the real Siri!” Applidium announced on its blog.

The clever developers, who create mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, used a fake security certificate impersonating an Apple one, allowing it to intercept the data being communicated by Siri.

And it worked: Siri can send commands to other non iPhone 4S devices HTTPS sever’s. “Seems like someone at Apple missed something,” note the developers.

Siri works by sending data to a remote server that identifies the communicating device as an iPhone 4S and has been designed to work with no other phone; not even an iPhone 4.

Apple’s PA could now even be used on iPad, although there has been some complaints about Siri malfunctions, although  latest iOS 5 software claims to improve its functionality, in particular understanding Aussie accents.

So, you want to Siri-ify another non-Apple device you still need the ‘identifier’ of at least one iPhone 4S, meaning you have to know someone with the new smartphone.

But Applidium note Apple could blacklist an identifier number if it wishes.
